As our country experiences the horror and tragedy caused by school shootings and other episodes of violence, American government officials have taken the opportunity to impose more firearm regulations upon citizens. Bureaucrats encourage us to give up our Constitutional liberties, claiming that in doing so we can abolish violence and murder. In reality, violence has increased drastically in countries with harsh gun control; crime in the U.K., for example, has skyrocketed by 35 percent and the amount of crimes involving handguns has more than doubled since guns were banned. This proves that when the government forces its way into the lives of citizens, the results will never be beneficial. The right to bear arms is a personal liberty and should be sacred to the individual, not controlled by governmental power.
The Founding Fathers clearly outlined firearm freedom in the Second Amendment, stating that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Government officials, including the president, twist these words to fit their own agenda, making statements such as, “Americans don’t need that type of gun. They don’t need a certain amount of ammunition.” Does President Obama need lifelong Secret Service protection? No, but it is his right to have it to aid in the self-defense of himself and his family, just as it is the right of the people to defend themselves and their own families. The Bill of Rights was designed to be just that – an outline of the sovereign liberties of Americans. It is a document which purposes to defend against violations of personal rights such as those imposed on the colonists by the King of England, and such as those imposed on Americans by the U.S. government.
Furthermore, if the government opts to take away the citizens’ right to protect themselves, who, then, will protect them? Criminals don’t abide by law; hence the reason for their being. Therefore, harsher law simply cannot decrease criminal activity. Jeff Cooper, American author and WWII Marine, wrote, “The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”
To take weapons from innocent, morally responsible Americans will not save any lives, except perhaps for those of murderers, rapists, and thieves.
In addition, if we allow the government to encroach on this aspect of personal liberty, we are paving the way for even further loss of freedom. The right to bear arms is one of the most crucial and lucidly defined elements of the Constitution. Currently, officials seek to tread on the Second Amendment by using tragedies involving guns, such as the Connecticut slaughter, to make a massive grasp for power. In attempting to control the weapons of Americans, bureaucracy infringes upon the unalienable rights of individuals: the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Permitting these rights to be crushed and trampled provides more fuel to feed the never-ending and ever-increasing inferno the American government has become. Not only is this an issue of whether or not we will be allowed to keep our weapons, but it is also a symbol. It is a symbol of the danger Americans are facing in this country: a tyranny, one that would go to unimaginable ends to keep its iron rule in place.
As free individuals who are made in the image of God and endowed by Him to sovereign unalienable rights, our urgent goal should be to fight against gun control by the government. We are not rapists, we are not murderers, we do not seek to hurt and destroy, so why should we be bound by laws that will actually benefit those who do seek violence? Americans must wake up to the violations of their liberty and individual sovereignty. They must recognize their position as moral, responsible citizens entitled with rights — not needs — and live up to this position. So as you listen to the heavy footstep of the government’s boots, coming to stamp out liberty and walk on your freedom, stand up on your own feet. Hold on to your guns, your family, your Constitution, yourself, bare your teeth and tell the tyrants, “Don’t tread on me.”
