Sam Walton gave the maximum $30,800 to the Obama Victory Fund in 2008, and $40,000 to the OVF this election.
Policy-wise, there’s plenty of reason for the Waltons to like Barack Obama:
Obama argues that his fundraising success comes from small donors, but that’s not really true. One out of every five Obama dollars comes from the campaign’s biggest bundlers, the Center for Public Integrity reports. Those bundlers include the likes of Pfizer lobbying chief Sally Susman and financier Michael Kempner of the MWW group.
In 2010, the Activist Post called for a Walmart Boycott, based on what they call “slave labor” and “discrimination against women.”
In 2012, a 7 page internal memo intended only for salaried employees makes clear that Walmart sees labor protests as a serious attack, though official communications call them “mere publicity stunts.”
The historic retail worker strikes began early October in Los Angeles, when 60-some people walked off work, and they quickly spread across the country. Earlier in September, workers at warehouses owned by Walmart in Illinois and California also went on strike.
Striking workers are demanding that Walmart end retaliatory practices against employees who attempt to organize by Nov. 23, Black Friday. If not, they will strike again on the biggest shopping day of the year, according to Colby Harris, a Walmart worker from Dallas, who participated in Tuesday’s strike.
